‘Anne With An E’ fans, rejoice! Amybeth McNulty joins season 4 of ‘Stranger Things’

Anne With An E (in my opinion) is arguably one of the best shows we have to date. The CBC and Netflix drama series’s wholesome and slightly more modern take of L.M. Montgomery’s classic tale Anne of Green Gables will make you appreciate, relate, and even fall in love with the characters of the story even more.

Since its release, it has garnered massive praise from fans worldwide–prompting them to create a petition to renew the show for a fourth season (which, as of this writing, has already collected over 1.5 million online signatures).

Seriously, we need more seasons of AWAE! Via GIPHY

But until the Canadian production company and the streaming platform actually confirm a new season, us ‘kindred spirits’ will have to settle with rewatching the series. Luckily though, fans of the show and of Anne will not have to wait long to see Amybeth McNulty back on screen, as the actress joins the cast of Stranger Things season four!

McNulty confirms her role in the series via an Instagram post. She wrote, “An honour to join the team. Looking forward to you all meeting Vickie very soon❤️ @strangerthingstv”.

Since this news was released, her Anne With An E co-stars were quick to congratulate her. Miranda Mckeon, the actress who played Josie Pye in the series, wrote “I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE!!!!!! 👏👏👏👏” and “Endlessly proud” to the actress’s post. While fellow actor Aymeric Jett Montaz and Anne With An E writer and producer Moira Walley-Beckett also celebrated the actress’s new role by commenting “Congrats🔥🔥🔥🔥” and “Wonderful & Huzzah! 🧡✨” respectively.

Additionally, the Duffer Brothers expressed their excitement in having McNulty join their Stranger Things season four cast. In a clip posted by Netflix, the brothers explain their love for Anne of Green Gables and their excitement to be working with Amybeth McNulty in this upcoming season.

“We [are] also big fans of ‘Anne With An E’ and we love Amybeth McNulty’s portrayal of Anne. And so, we’ve been dying to work with her ever since and she is our perfect Vickie,” Matt Duffer shares in the video.

McNulty is set to play Vickie in the highly anticipated fourth season of the sci-fi drama series. According to the show’s social media post, Vickie is “a cool, fast-talking band nerd who catches the eye of one of our beloved heroes.”

To know more about Amybeth McNulty’s role on the show, you can follow @strangerthingstv and @netflix on Instagram for more updates.

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle name daughter after the Queen and the late Princess Diana

In case you missed it, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry welcomed a 7 lbs 11 oz. baby girl at the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, California, last June 4. 2021. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made the announcement public via their website just yesterday, June 6, 2021.

Screengrab of the headline from

The Duke and Duchess’ second child was named Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor. The name Lilibet was taken from the nickname Queen Elizabeth II’s grandfather King George V gave to her, while her second name was from the late Princess of Wales, Lady Diana Spencer

“She (Lili) is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we’ve felt from across the globe,” the couple wrote on their website. “Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family.”

Since news of this spread online, the British Royal Family has extended their congratulations to the couple posting on Instagram, “Congratulations to The Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the birth of Lilibet Diana! The Queen, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted with the news.”

Prince Harry’s brother, Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton also shared their joy on the arrival of Lili. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wrote, “We are all delighted by the happy news of the arrival of baby Lili. Congratulations to Harry, Meghan and Archie.”

Like the British Royal Family and many of the “Royal Watchers” out there, we are definitely happy to hear the news on the healthy birth of Lili. Here’s to hoping the Duke and Duchess of Sussex share a photo of the newborn with her older brother Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor

Until then, we wish all the best to Prince Harry, Meghan, and Archie on their newest family addition! Via GIPHY

This IG shop sells cute, dainty teacups that’ll make you feel like you’re in ‘Bridgerton’

When Bridgerton first premiered on Netflix back in December 2020, it garnered massive praise and positive reviews from viewers all over the world. And because of this, it not only became the subject of many TikTok videos but it also inspired the creation of a musical and was even dubbed as the streaming platform’s “biggest series launch,” according to TV Line’s report.  Given this, it’s a no-brainer that the production company decided to renew the series until its third and fourth season.

However, with season 2 currently still in production, it seems like many fans will have to wait a while before they can see their favorite characters back on the small screen. Until then, they can enjoy drinking tea like the members of ton with this selection of teacups from Instagram shop TeaCups Manila

Just take a look at a few of their items:

Would you drink tea out of any of these teacups? Via GIPHY

So, what’s the story behind this online shop?

TeaCups Manila was founded by Filipina Christine Tambaoan  back in September 2020. This online business started out as a way to supplement and fund the projects she had for her start-up tech company.

She tells Say Philippines, “We actually founded a tech startup company last year (May 2020) which was fully-funded by my co-founder and I. We were able to finish the prototype by September 2020. However, we needed more funds to create a second prototype which we will use for demonstration to our target customers. So, instead of draining all our savings to build the second prototype, we thought of a side business that can potentially fund our startup company.”

Inspired by Filipino celebrity Jinkee Pacquiao’s personal teacup and mug collection, Tambaoan decided to try selling teacups as a way to support her tech business–prompting the creation of her Instagram shop.

“I have been silently wishing to have a collection like hers (Pacquiao). But at the back of my mind, there’s no way that I could afford it,” she says. “Out of curiosity, I did some research on teacups and found out that there are actually affordable, pretty cups [for sale]–and that’s where everything started.”

Initially, Tambaoan admits that she didn’t fully understand the allure of having a nice teacup, other than it being something pretty to look at. However, after actually experiencing her first drink using a teacup, she finally understood the hype of having one.

“I had coffee on my first ‘personally-bought’ teacup, [and] the feeling was really ecstatic. I was giggling out of excitement and happiness. Up to this day, I can’t really fully explain this kind of feeling yet. I guess one has to try it in order to see for themselves this kind of feeling.”

She further adds that the artistry and beauty of these cups can be therapeutic in a way–allowing its users to feel a certain emotion when they’re drinking from them.

“I have come to understand that in times of distress, it is art that gives us comfort and hope. Having been able to see hundreds of teacups, I have concluded that each teacup carries the beauty of a [piece of] art,” she explains. “A teacup actually gives you a feeling. It could make you feel happy, excited, luxurious, relaxed… and so much more. Each teacup gives you a certain mood/vibe. Thus, you get different feelings each time. I think the feeling that a teacup gives you is what makes it special.”

As of this writing, TeaCups Manila has over 8,000 followers on their Instagram page and they continue to release new and pre-loved teacups for their online shoppers to check out and enjoy.

“Our mission here at TeaCups Manila is to make each one’s coffee and tea session more special and meaningful. We highly value inner peace, self-care, kindness, and compassion. We greatly believe that these values can be practiced daily at home; and one way of doing it is to give yourself or those at home with you the best coffee and tea experience each time,” Tambaoan adds. “You don’t need to have the best coffee or tea in the world. When you use a lovely and dainty teacup, any ordinary tea and coffee becomes special.”

These ‘Cruella’ realizations will make you think twice about the Disney villain

Many of us have probably already seen the 1961 Disney classic One Hundred and One Dalmatians, wherein a fur-obsessed Cruella de Vil attempts to kidnap puppies from couple Roger and Anita in order to create a signature black and white spotted coat. And back then, you probably might have despised the animated villain for her sheer ruthlessness in wanting to abduct these innocent dogs–we definitely have while watching the movie as kids.

But this time around, Disney brings a new version of Cruella to light and it’s definitely one that’ll make you think twice about the villain you once hated during your childhood.

Here are a few things we realized about the character that made us think differently of her:

Cruella was a dog lover from the start

Admittedly, when we first watched the 1961 film, we never would’ve thought that this deranged woman could ever be a dog lover. But in the 2021 movie, Cruella–who was played by Emma Stone–had a pet dog named Buddy with whom she genuinely loved and considered as family.

She was also very friendly towards her friend Horace’s pet Wink and even adopted the Baroness’ (Emma Thompson) three Dalmatians after her arrest.

So, given this, viewers (like ourselves) were a bit puzzled as to how a fur parent like Cruella can go from loving dogs to wanting to skin them just for the sake of fashion?

Could she really be this evil? Via GIPHY

Now, there are hints of a possible sequel, considering the mid-credits scene in the film. However, this little tidbit really did make us ask, what changed Cruella’s mind about dogs?

Cruella’s past turned her into the complex, crazy character we know of her today

Cruella, originally named Estella, did not have a picturesque childhood. In fact, because of her strong personality and fearless nature, she often got into trouble at school–prompting her expulsion and forcing her and her mother to move elsewhere.

But when a horrible incident leads to her mother’s death, she is left to fend for herself. Luckily for her, she meets Jasper and Horace, two orphaned boys who teach her how to survive in life through theft.

Given this, it’s obvious that she didn’t necessarily have a normal, healthy upbringing. Plus the trauma of losing her mother–which she initially believed was her fault–caused Cruella to repress some of her feelings and sometimes revert to the persona of a mad, arrogant, and somewhat ruthless individual.

This in totality proves that Cruella’s not innately bad but rather, she’s a complex character who has been through a lot.

Cruella may be mad, but she’s definitely a fashion genius

With Cruella’s biological mother revealed to be the Baroness, viewers finally understand why Cruella can be a bit over-the-top and kooky. But it also made them see why Cruella was such a genius when it comes to fashion–it’s because it’s in her genes!

Sure, we can never forgive her animated counterpart for wanting to skin animals for the sake of clothing, but Stone’s Cruella was an innovative go-getter that not only thought out-of-the-box but was also very caring towards animals. Like seriously, who would’ve ever even thought of creating a coat that would burn to reveal a gorgeous red dress like this?

She’s definitely giving Cinna (Katniss Everdeen’s designer) a run for his money! Via GIPHY

Overall, the 2021 Disney movie really made us think twice about a character we once hated and we can’t wait to see Cruella’s evolution, should the company decide to make a sequel about it!

Mindy Kaling says we should ‘normalize’ single women wearing rings on their ‘ring finger’ and TBH we agree with her

It’s a universally accepted tradition that when someone is to be married, they wear their engagement ring on the left ring finger. So, whenever we come across a woman with a ring on her left hand, we automatically assume she’s about to get married and promptly offer our congratulations.

But what if that’s not always the case? What if this person just wanted to casually wear that accessory on her left hand? Will that still be considered as socially acceptable?

Well, Mindy Kaling thinks that we should normalize unmarried women wearing rings on their ring fingers. In a tweet she posted last May 22, 2021, the Mindy Project actress wrote, “Normalize unmarried women wearing rings on their ring finger without a hubbub.”

Since Kaling posted this tweet, a number of online users agreed with her and then shared their experiences of being seen wearing a ring on their left ring finger. One person replied to the thread, “I have a ring my great aunt left me. It only fit on my left ring finger. The amount of shit I would get for wearing it was insane. To be clear, it looks like a flower, not an engagement ring. Anyone I dated was especially sensitive to it. Let people wear what they want.” Another one commented, “I had someone freak out on me once because I was wearing a ring on ‘that’ finger – told me it was bad luck and I’d never get married. I hope so, lmao.”

But not everyone who responded agreed with her stance. One Twitter user wrote, “The ‘ring finger’ thing is a form of communication. If everyone wears a ring on that finger then it loses all meaning.  Why sabotage it? I want to know if you’re married so I don’t make a fool of myself flirting with you.” While another joked, “[You’ve] got 7 other fingers to choose from… first it was pets as children now its this…… I guess in 2021 it’s fake it till you make it.”

Now, Kaling has not been the only celebrity to share this opinion. In fact, just earlier this year, Filipino actress Ivana Alawi released a video blog wherein she bought herself an 8-carat diamond ring, as a symbol of self-love and not an impending engagement.

Alawi explained in her video, “Bakit ako mag-aantay sa lalaki? Eh ‘di bilhan ko na lang sarili ko, ‘di ba? It’s just a symbol to love myself. Parang gift ko talaga siya para sa sarili ko” (Why should I wait for a man to buy me a ring? I’ll just buy my own, right? It’s just a symbol to love myself. Like a gift meant only for me.)

Obviously, this topic is highly debatable. But for the record, we’re definitely on Mindy Kaling’s side here. So, tell us in the comments below, are you okay with unmarried women wearing rings on their ring finger? Or should that spot only be reserved for women who are actually engaged?

Macoy Dubs reacts to Olivia Culpo’s Miss Universe hosting skills and online users can’t help but agree with him

Fans of Mark Averilla, a.k.a. Macoy Dubs, know that the online personality is known to be very vocal about his opinions. So, when the 2020 Miss Universe pageant aired yesterday, no one was surprised to know that the comedian had a few thoughts on the show–particularly towards 2012 Miss Universe winner Olivia Culpo’s hosting of the pageant.

In a TikTok video he shared on his Facebook page, Averilla shared his thoughts on Culpo’s less than enthusiastic approach to announcing the finalists.

“Tingnan ninyo ang energy, hindi ako natutuwa,” he said after mimicking her hosting style. (Just look at her energy, I am not enjoying how she’s hosting this.)

He also shared another video wherein he jokingly asked the former beauty queen to have more energy while presenting.

“Sis, mag-Milo ka naman. Konteng respeto sa mga kandidata, sis diba? One year na nga walang Miss Universe tapos walang energy. Di ka nagrecharge, sis?” he asked.  (Sis, drink some Milo. [And] have a little respect for the candidates. We didn’t have a Miss Universe pageant last year and this year, we have one and yet, there’s still no energy. Didn’t you recharge, sis?)

Now, Averilla wasn’t the only one to notice Culpo’s somewhat “bland” way of hosting. In fact, a number of online users agreed with him on this. One person commented, “Hindi din ako natutuwa sis, inaantok ako sa kanya. Hahahahahaha” (I’m also not enjoying her hosting style, sis, instead I’m getting sleepy.). While another person wrote, “Same feeling right here.”

A few other online users even recommended that she be replaced by Toni Gonzaga, Steve Harvey, and Averilla himself as the host of this year’s Miss Universe competition.

Online users be like 💁‍♀️ Via GIPHY

Although the pageant is over and Mexico has been crowned the new Miss Universe (Congratulations, BTW!), we hope that, in time, Olivia Culpo can improve her hosting skills and redeem herself in the next competition. And to Macoy Dubs, we say, keep doing you, sis!

There’s a ‘dark’ Frozen fan theory about Kristoff’s coat that you might want to know about

When the first Frozen film was released in 2013, kids and kids-at-heart were enamored by its selection of catchy songs and its quirky yet lovable characters. Because of this, Disney decided to continue its storyline and release a 2019 sequel which shows Elsa transforming into the fifth spirit and Anna ascending the throne.

But more than that, the second film also showed fans a deeper and more endearing side to Kristoff. And his character arc was so admirable that it even caused a number of online users to name him as the “Best Disney Prince”

Although we know Kristoff as the sensitive and supportive love interest of Anna, not much is really known about his past other than he and Sven were orphaned young and then, adopted and raised by trolls. So, viewers are left to ask, who are Kristoff’s parents?  What happened to Sven’s mother? And how did the two end up getting orphaned together?

Well, unless the production company decides to give Kristoff his own prequel (which he rightfully deserves), we might never know the answers to these questions. However, five years ago, Reddit user u/superclaude1 shared a theory about what happened to Sven’s parents–and it relates to Kristoff’s coat.

In this thread entitled ‘Kristoff’s coat is made of reindeer skin,’ the online user explains this dark fan theory about why Kristoff’s jacket seems to be made out of reindeer pelt and why he chooses to constantly wear it. This person wrote, “The ice harvesters must have killed Sven’s mother, leaving a baby Sven for Kristoff to look after, and giving him the pelt to wear. This explains why Sven is so close to Kristoff too, and why Kristoff still wears the same pelt. The smell reminds Sven of his mum.”

Where are the tissues when you need them? Via GIPHY

If this is true, we can’t help but get emotional over this scenario. But not everyone seems convinced about this theory. One user replied, “Made from reindeer? Sure. Made from Sven’s mom? Highly doubtful. That thing would have swamped little kid Kristoff.” While another person commented, “While it could easily be made from a reindeer, the coat being made from Sven’s mother is incredibly far-fetched. He and Sven grew up together. When would he have gotten that coat made of Sven’s mother when he was an adult?”

Now, until Disney confirms the actual truth about Kristoff and Sven’s childhood background, us fans would definitely be left guessing and contemplating about these fan theories. So, here’s to hoping the company will soon give us some clarity about this.

#SayPHExclusive: Understanding ‘The Replication Game’ from author Cedric Tan

Last month, Quezon City-based author Cedric Tan introduced the world to his science fiction  and technothriller electronic book (e-book), The Replication Game.

This new novel follows eight strangers, who are trapped in one house, looking to identify and destroy the android amongst them. The only problem is that this robotic being is most likely a ‘Humarion’– a lifelike entity that looks almost indistinguishable from other humans. So, the questions remain, can these participants uncover which of them is not human in time? And is death inescapable in this dark and twisted social experiment?

To know what happens next, interested readers can purchase the kindle edition of the book on Amazon for the price of 5.99 USD (approximately 286.48 PHP). But in an effort to know more about the story and how it came to be, Say Philippines did an exclusive interview with Cedric Tan himself to know more about the inspiration and the process he went through to bring this fictional tale to life.

On writing ‘The Replication Game’

Tan tells us that he has always found himself interested in how the ever-changing technology influences the human mind and psyche.

“I have been fascinated by moral issues surrounding technology for quite a while, especially when it comes to things like AI’s, cybernetics, and bionics,” he explains. “The genre was not something I actively chose per se, but the story arose within it as a result of the story I wanted to tell.”

After realizing and properly outlining the plot, Tan then took three years to write and develop this novel. But much like any other project, he admits that there were some difficulties along the way in weaving a complex tale such as this–particularly in the character development aspect of it.

“Making sure that every single character is fleshed out and realistic without ‘playing favorites,’ as it were, was a challenge in such a character-centric story. It can become easy to make some characters fall back on their archetypes and call it a day, while focusing on making others more unique.”

However, he was able to overcome this hurdle by adding “a little care and finesse to [each character to] make them come alive.”

In the end, Tan is proud of the story he’s created and he leaves interested readers with this message about the book: “If I told you that a robot had a soul, would you believe me? Seems absurd, right? But perhaps you might open yourself to that possibility. This is something that The Replication Game may challenge you to do.”

On self-publication and advice to other writers

When asked why he chose to self-publish his book on the e-book platform, Tan replied, “Due to the pandemic’s effects on the publishing industry, it made sense to pursue a different channel.”

He then went on to share this piece of advice for aspiring writers who also have their own personal stories to tell: “Don’t rely on motivation or inspiration to write. Rely on discipline and self-imposed deadlines. Motivation is fickle. Sure, it’s difficult to write when you don’t ‘feel like it,’ but that’s the only way your stories will come to life.”

You can now read and purchase a copy of The Replication Game by Cedric Tan here
